Tokyo -- Screaming mobs of Japanese radical students invaded parliament’s grounds and engaged in a bloody free-for-all with police using fire hoses and clubs, June 15. Shouting against pro-American Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi and hurling chunks of pavement at some 1,000 police, hundreds of students surged into the grounds through the south gate after tearing down the heavy gates and setting fire to a police truck blocking their way. More than 300 were reported injured and two dead, one confirmed, in worst flare-up of violence since Japan’s left wing launched a massive campaign against the prime minister and the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty. Rioting leftists Zengakuren and police betting in front of the south gate of the Diet Building (1960).
