The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

A Tropical Winter by the New York Giants
from Holiday Halftime
(Manilus Records; 1969)

When I first stumbled across a copy of The New York Giants Sing Holiday Halftime, I figured I was onto a very special slice of Christmas cheese, but it seems this LP was just the tip of the iceberg. Turns out, nearly every NFL team in 1969 put out a variation on this album, with the same cover graphic and instrumental backing track, but each team actually supplying unique vocals for each edition, whether it's the San Francisco 49ers or the Green Bay Packers.

I have only heard the Giants' version, so I couldn't tell you which team had the best pipes, although it could have been this lineup since someone at Canadian music clearing house Quality Records chose it for release up north in the land of the CFL. Feel free to look it up on Google to see all the variations. Maybe someday I'll feel like tracking down more of them and doing some comparisons, but it won't happen any time soon. Here you can hear a bit of the album with some voiceover by the one and only Jean Shepherd.

Looks like Shep's copy features the Jets, not the Giants. Big diff.
