"When I was studying in Paris as a youth, my guide and philosopher, Viteau Paul, warned me, 'Never caricaturize a woman. She'll never forgive you.' I heedlessly made this drawing of my friend, 'Big Eathel' as we called her, and she didn't speak to me for seven years. She relented finally and I painted her portrait. Next to Jack, she was the best company in the world."
