The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Wasn't this the year they escorted John Chancellor off the convention floor while he was giving a live report. He signed off with "This is John Chancellor, somewhere in custody."

@JonCow, I looked it up -- that was actually the 1964 Republican convention, when he managed to annoy convention organizers by refusing to relinquish his spot on the floor when asked. Although considering the chaos surrounding (and permeating) the 1968 Democratic convention, it would have made more sense.

I'm really digging on his microphone manzier. All the modern reporters (read: GQ male models with an IQ of a shoe) should be forced to wear one.

1968 was the year that Dan Rather was roughed up by some of Chicago's "Finest" on the floor of the convention at the orders of Mayor Daley.

@Brent, I wonder if Mayor Daley's "Finest" were asking Rather "What's the frequency Kenneth?" as they kicked his ass.
