The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Pierre Trudeau looking a bit unkempt!

Agent Sideburns is pretty cool, too.

As I recall, back in the days of Trudeau-mania that unkempt look was part of the attraction. At least when compared with Bob Stanfield.

Nixon once referred to Trudeau as "That asshole"

at first glance I thought this was the 3 Stooges..

So did a lot of Canadians - particularly out west in my part of Canada.

Of course Trudeau was not particularly forgiving of those he considered his intellectual inferiors, and one had the feeling that most people were on that list, including Nixon (and Ford, and Carter, and Reagan).

The world needs some more ass kicking Trudeau-esque politicians, especially these days. Hard to believe we're in a new federal election in Canada and the fact that the Liberal leader taught at Havard is being used against him. Life at the bottom of the barrel sure does stink.

What Lisa said.

(My dad, who was a federal civil servant during the Trudeau years, might not agree, but we never did see eye to eye on politics.)
