The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Yeah, well Dalton we need a couple of head shots, you know, for publicity, nothing fancy just a couple of snaps. Go down and see this guy I know, does all the big stars, Velez, Hattie, Lloyd Nolan, all of 'em. Little lighting, trim that 'stache, maybe a hat, he'll know. Get back to me.

I am going to collect the whole series!

I am SO not Spartacus.."

Another victim of HUAC. I don't agree with his politics, but don't agree with what was done to him and others. The most un-American activities were the witch-hunts committed by the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Much better than Spartacus. By writing it he exposed the blacklist for what it was and achieved a victory.

Now here's a series. Look forward to more.

Looks a little like Adolph Menjou, doesn't he?

Now THAT is how you wear a hat!

On his best day, Adolph Menjou wouldn't amount to a pimple on Dalton Trumbo's ass. (sorry, sometimes it gets away from me)

Tom Sutpen said...

Well, Menjou was an actor, and Trumbo a screenwriter. I'm not sure any comparison between the two is altogether logical.

MichaelRyerson said...

yeah, and one of 'em was a rat.

Makes me think of the story Ring Lardner Jr (another of the Hollywood Ten) told about when he went to get a passport photo so he could travel to England to take work. The photographer (not knowing who Lardner was) confided to Lardner when he came to pick the photos, "I don't think you're gonna like them; they make you look like a Communist!"
