The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

I decline to comment on the status of his career.

My friend said that he's on fire, but I saw He & She. . . .

First David, now Jack. Who's next? Sean or Shirley? Or are you going to go with Bonaduce and the Cowsils?

Tommy O:

I think I know the story you're referring to (tell it if you wish), and I guess it's plausible . . . but I'd be more inclined to believe it if it had come from someone other than Truman Capote (Gore Vidal once said that anytime Capote spoke about anyone, you were seeing the process of invention in its most primal form).

What is with you people? Have you never seen Jack Cassidy's COLUMBO episodes or his gay villain in Clint Eastwood's EIGER SANCTION? His guest shots on BEWITCHED? He was also Bob Cratchit in MR MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL and had star billing in the 1966 SUPERMAN musical (as a reporter)! Nobody did smarmy and egotistical like Jack and yet he was funny, intelligent and could sing, too! All with a grin and a twinkle in his eye!
Definitely cool! Thanks!
