The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

This has to be the moment after Tricky informed The King that he'd see what he could do about getting him a for-real badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (later known as the DEA); whereupon Sonny West and the other guy (I forgot which Memphis Mafioso it was) asked the leader of the Free World if they could have one too.

They ended up giving BNDD badges to his entire retinue that day. I think Elvis's daddy even got one.

Too bad The Colonel didn't tag along.

Yep, Sonny West and Jerry Schilling. You can absorb the whole shebang here, including Elvis's letter to Nixon beforehand.

I was going to make the letter an artifact, but the gun was cooler.

Was Nixon's flirtation with long sideburns before or after this meeting?

Sorry about the Nixon/sideburns remark because I don't think Nixon ever affected the style of the day in any era. For some reason I sometimes get the late prez and Ed Sullivan (who DID wear his sideburns long) mixed up.
