The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

The creepiest thing about it, knowing what lay in the future, is how cheerful Stratten and Snider look.

Well, it's not that surprising. They were married, after all; and I find it hard to believe that their union was an unrelieved nightmare right out of the gate (the Peter Bogdanovich line). This was undoubtedly taken at some Playboy Manse get-together, before it all started to go south for The Sniders'.

Dawson looks suitably gassed.

Family Feud indeed.

Jesus, she was a beautiful girl.

Say what you will, Dawson is a very witty guy. He was great on MATCH GAME, and he delivered a unpitying self-parody in THE RUNNING MAN. The guy co-starred in HOGAN'S HEROES (with Bob Crane, who has much in common with Stratten and Snider) and was married to Diana Dors.

Stupid Paul Snider. 'They All Laughed' was great.

What a noxious yellow get-up. What a pathetic little man.

Now, that's what I call going out on a limb!

I think it's interesting if you note the body language. Stratten has almost completely turned her body toward the other guy and not her husband. Maybe she was already having other thoughts about him when they married. Maybe she felt she owed him something. Maybe nobody ever told her she owed herself the success she had got and not him.
