The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."
-- Nick Tosches, Where Dead Voices Gather

We Five Are Five

While members of the Académie Goncourt gaze in wide-eyed wonder as Colette blows out the candles, we here at If Charlie Parker Was a Gunslinger . . . pause to observe our fifth anniversary in the blogosphere.

Tom, Congratulations on one of the most extraordinary web endeavors ever undertaken. I'm thrilled you extended the generous offer to me to be a part of the team and even though I'm the new kid around here I have quickly discovered you treat everyone on the team like they're the ones running the blog which is amazing in and of itself. You and this blog are an inspiration to me. Thanks again and congratulations on five years!

I discovered the Gunslinger four years and eight months ago.

Four years and eight months ago, it became my favourite destination on this Web. Bar none.

Four years and eight months later, nothing has changed.

Thank you Tom, Stephen, Richard, Kimberly, and Greg!

Many, many more years, please!

I've only been stopping by for a year or so but when I first stumbled through the door I realised what a treasure this place was. I set out to view every single image and read every single caption in your archives just to catch up with the more fortunate who'd been here from the beginning. Took me about a month, many pots of coffee and a couple of missed deadlines but by jiggers I did it! And now not a single day goes by that I'm not lurking through. Thanks so much.

Five years. Unbelievable. So that means that I was much closer to witnessing the beginning of this beautiful construct than I realized. (I started in November 2004 myself.) Congratulations on carving out a unique and irreplaceable spot in the blogosphere, Tom. It, and I daresay we, and certainly I, wouldn't be the same without If Charlie Parker... and you.

Thanks everyone!

For those of you that have been going through the rubbis- uh, I mean archives, I apologize for older posts of mine whose pictures have gone astray. Such are the vaguaries of my photobucket account. I don't have time to go back through them all, but let me know if there are any you'd like fixed and I'll get 'em back up there.

Holey moley. I apologize for not acknowledging this torrent of good wishes until now . . . I am almost biologically incapable of dealing with compliments, even in part (the 'He/She/They have me confused with somebody else' gremlin in my head holds dominion far too often) . . . but please, don't think it's not appreciated in this quarter (actually, this fifth).

We are going to keep doing what we're doing, for as long as we're able to do it. Your great and good vibes give me all the fuel I'll ever require to do just that.

Thank you all. Seriously.

Everybody's already said all the cool stuff, so I'll just say: hear, hear. And thank you.

Love this place, it's like wandering the streets and lives of the great, the elite, and sometimes the not so great or elite. Thanks for the view.
