I always wondered: are they snapping their fingers, or are they posing their hands so that maybe champagne glasses can later be airbrushed in? Like the way photo models often would pose for cigarette ads, and the coffin nail would be added in afterwards (k.d. lang marvelously kidded this in the cover art for her album "Drag").
Fred's right. I don't recognize Mrs. John Murphy, let alone Black Francis.
On a different note: those ghostly males are in fact sorta cool as a graphics design element. They fit in with the overall theme as what are supposed to be the "dates," but due to their facelessness draw no attention away from the stars.

This doesn't look like any Pixies album in my collection.
I think they were snapping fingers - one of their hallmarks. They don't look like pixies, tho, more like shield-women.
