Multi-talent rarely gets personified by a Sage, yet with The Captain, we were all blessed.

Has it been verified that his is not, in fact, "THE Magic Band"? It apparently took some wrangling to get Beefheart (who some of his collaborators at the time characterized as more cult leader than band leader) to modify the pronoun/article adjective. In any case, we can all be assured the ensemble is fast and bulbous, tight also).

I . . . don't recall ever coming across the ensemble listed as anything other than 'His Magic Band' (the ootleg-bay I got this image from lists them as such). I don't know how many lineups Captain Beefheart had over the years, but the designation remained consistent; far as I've seen anyway.

Long live the Bat Chain Puller, who currently churns out fantastical abstract paintings somewhere in Northern California.

Check it: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jifixqw5ldje . In any case, your blog rattles my bones and speeds my heart. Keep up the fine work, Tom.

It started out as HIS Magic Band, but turned into THE Magic Band.
