The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Honestly, this dress that Marilyn is wearing is exactly like the one Mariah Carey wore yesterday at Michael Jackson's memorial service.

People really obsess over her in a way that I've never understood. However, I must say that this photograph is to me extremely interesting. I've always thought she looks like Richard Avedon just told her that their dog died.

Was this shot staged, or did Avedon capture a real moment here? If that's a phony expression, it sure looks realistic...

another candid winner....I'd say its time to call it a day here before, like Marilyn, we all become zombies

I'd say marginally-staged; maybe not even that much. According to Avedon, what's in the photo is real (it was taken just moments after the conclusion of a standard photo shoot and she was clearly coming down from the performance), but she was very much aware that he was photographing her in that state.

Rhys:

I think that technique only works on anti-semitic, pro-Nazi ex-regents and their equally odious wives.

I've never really understood those who don't understand why we obsess over her.

Her internal demons are showing.

Sad.

“For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that’s — she did Marilyn Monroe. Then there was the inevitable drop… she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I wouldn’t photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no.” -- Richard Avedon

Rhys: I agree and I wonder if it isn't the case that human tribes are obliged to select one (1) person of maximum prestige in a given category and obsess about that singular individual. (It may be a matter of our biology but that doesn't mean I have to like it.)

I have to wonder if you can't understand why People obsess over her why are you here? Ask yourself that....
