The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Oddly enough, this photo predates his heroin habit.

Kids, this is how you'll end up if you keep listening to that rock and roll music.

I have read that this is one of Annie Leibowitz's Very Earliest efforts.

I wonder if it was taken before or after K.R.'s performance.

Legend.

Isn't this the 1972 tour? Wasn't the heroin already there?

I've read that the heroin use began precisely on July 4, 1972. The Stones played RFK that day. I was there, and they weren't very good. I've always wondered if Keith shot up before the show, and that's why they were bad, or if he shot up after the show, because they were so bad. Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Shouldn't the caption be "Keith Richards medicates"?

If you had wagered $ once upon a time that both Keith Richards and Lou Reed would outlive Michael Jackson, I would have felt like I was taking candy from a baby.

Today? Not so much.
