The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

I wonder who Jumbo is in the gray suit in the background. It sure isn't Ringo...

Who wears short shorts?

I had to guess, I'd say that is Fab Four court photographer, Robert Whitaker, skulking around back there.

But I could be wrong.

This was probably taken on their trip to Florida, I think that's where they were also shot with Muhammed Ali.

Hmm...did George have another run-in with the taxman?

There's a photo of Whitaker then and now (or rather, yesterday and today) over here.

This is in the basement of the Deauville hotel in Miami, rehearsing for the second Sullivan show that was broadcast from there. I've seen similar b&w photos in an old Dezo Hoffman book. The guy in the back is definitely not Whitaker; he didn't meet up with them until later in the year when they toured Australia and he was assigned to take photos of Brian Epstein for a newspaper interview.

I just noticed the five o'clock shadow on Paul. That's the first time I recall seeing that before. Sure, he had a beard but he usually has that soft, cherubic face.

Cracking shot. To me it looks like it could've been taken in 1989 rather than the sixties.

Guess I'm so used to seeing any pics of this era being in black and white.

No...This is while they were shooting HELP in the Bahamas...their hair is much too long for the First trip to America...and John has those glasses he was sporting during that period.
