When Legends Gather #512

Carrie Fisher and a now-unidentified luminary who may (or may not) be Wim Wenders.

Update (04/13/09): Word comes from Carrie Fisher herself, informing us that the individual photographed with her above is not Steven Spielberg. Until I find out who it actually is (assuming I do, anyway), I'm altering the caption to read as it does now.

Our apologies to Ms. Fisher

She looked wacked even then... But I love her.

Either that isn't Spielberg or it's the worst photo of him ever. Also, he wore his hair long in those days.

It almost looks more like Keith Gordon circa Christine. Although I'm fine with calling him a legend too.

When I first glanced at it I thought it was Wally Cox.

From what I can gather, this photo was taken at a party following the premiere of FIST in April 1978, when he didn't have the flowing locks of his Jaws days. Maybe he'd been tearing his hair out trying to find a way to make 1941 funny.

She's got a fresh cigarette - something you don't see nowadays at awards dinners -- or even indoors most places.

Her dress is particularly unfortunate, isn't it?

Yes Campaspe, maybe keith Gordon will play SS in the biopic.

I love Miss Fisher for that line she screams at W.Beatty in Shampoo "I am not my mother!!!"

I commented on this photo on Carrie's blog, and this is what she had to say:

Carrie Fisher on March 26th, 2009 at 2:04 am:

The picture that Dan sent is of me, but the person with me is NOT Steven. I’m not exactly sure WHO it is, but I know it’s not Spielberg.

Dan:

My direct thanks to you (and my indirect thanks to Ms. Fisher).

Well . . . this is a quandry, isn't it. Could be that Marvin is correct and the other luminary is Wim Wenders (certainly looks like him). Any rate, no offense was intended to Ms. Fisher, or anyone. It was sent to me by a donor who wanted to remain anonymous, and they said it was Spielberg . . . which is not to shift blame from myself, because I didn't question it (even marginally), until the first round of comments adter it was posted.

Other words, my bad (and no one else's).

12 March 2009 The Guardian (London) published
Wenders anecdote connecting him to George Lucas in California in 1978

"... in the summer of 1978, when I was living in San Francisco and working on a movie called Hammett, for Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Pictures. One weekend, at very short notice, I was told that I could join the film director Akira Kurosawa on a trip to Francis's home in Napa Valley. Kurosawa was in town to discuss a film that Francis and George Lucas were going to executive produce, which turned out to be one of his last great masterpieces - Kagemusha."
Do follow the KTORY bloglink for Wim's lovely photo of the Lucas Coppola Kurosawa entourage in a waterhole on a hot day
