The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

A great moment in television if ever there was one.

Love that pic. As so often with artists, Frank Zappa was much less of a snob than a lot of his fans were. Flo & Eddie said that Zappa hired them because he liked the Turtles' music.

Zappa belongs in The Cool Hall of Fame, easily.

The Monkees, derided as the PreFab Four in their day, actually rubbed had connections to an amazing assortment of folks including Zappa, Jack Nicholson, Neil Young, Steven Stills and Charlie Manson.

At the company where I work we've given names to all the meeting rooms to make it easy to refer to them when booking meetings. We named one of the rooms the Frank Zappa room.

The Monkeys did know some pretty cool people. They also had talent. Even the Beatles professed a liking for their music. And, in a six degrees sort of way, their acquaintance with Charles Manson linked them to Dennis Wilson (although Charlie totally freaked out the other Beach Boys).
