Clyde, whatta man. I think it's totally appropriate to place him first - he was doing "secular gospel" type material (which supposedly is the definition of the transition into soul) as early as 1952.
I can't hear him do White Christmas (with the Drifters) without getting the shivers. Still my favourite version.
