Beginning now, and for the immediate to near future, I have to take some time off from this blog due to the passing of a family member earlier today. Can't say at this time when I'll regain even the inclination to update this blog, but I will return eventually; sooner rather later I hope.
Any rate, I wish you all the best there is to wish for the holidays.
Thanks,
Tom
The Explanation
(for those who require one)
And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

A Farewell
by Coventry Patmore
With all my will, but much against my heart,
We two now part.
My Very Dear,
Our solace is, the sad road lies so clear.
It needs no art,
With faint, averted feet
And many a tear,
In our opposèd paths to persevere.
Go thou to East, I West.
We will not say
There’s any hope, it is so far away.
But, O, my Best,
When the one darling of our sadness,
The nursling Grief,
Is dead,
And no dews blur our eyes
To see the peach-bloom come in evening skies,
Perchance we may,
Where now this night is day,
And even through faith of still averted feet,
Making full circle of our banishment,
Amazèd meet;
The bitter journey to the bourne so sweet
Seasoning the termless feast of our content
With tears of recognition never dry.

Sorry for your loss. It's especially hard this time of year.
News like this remids us to be kind to each other, especially to the ones we love, who we can often treat poorly. "Memento mortis." I offer my condolences, as well as my thanks for the inspiration you lend to the rest of us.
Sorry to hear the sad news, Tom. Huge thanks for your previous diligence and hopefully you'll be feeling better soon.

I'm not someone you know even remotely, but I thought I'd add my condolences. I know from recent personal experience that having this happen at this time of year makes it even harder than it already is.
All the images I have seen here helped me very much when I went through a similar event. And I know how vain words may seem right now.
Toutes mes condoléances - condoleances and thoughts from France. Et merci pour tout.

Me too. This blog has come to be one of my favorites, and after a recent loss it was one of my little refuges. I hope that the knowledge that you've been a source of comfort to others helps you a little in this difficult time.

Sorry for your loss.
So sorry to hear of your loss. Best wishes to you and your family and thank you for your wonderful blog.
Thanks, everybody, for the incredibly kind words; both posted here and sent to me by email. Having never lost a family member before . . . not one who was as close to me, at any rate . . . it's not only painful, it's bewildering as well. In the next day or two, I'm going to start putting myself back on the rails, as it were; a small (yet crucial) part of it is resuming my duties here.
Hope y'all had a fantastic Christmas. Thanks again.
Tom, your work is important to me.
And, I'm guessing, to so many others.
I hope one of them is you.
Tom, like many others here, I'd like to offer my condolences and thank you for all your fine work on the blog. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2009.
The pain of loss is a dreadful thing and takes a longer while to ease than many would think.
It helps to be with others who also suffer the loss, and eventually we realise that none of us simply exists bodily, but we exist in the hearts and minds of all those who know and love us, and in that sense, we all live forever.
Come back soon and
"Post away the heartache"
Thanks, Anodyne. That's what I'm trying to do on all fronts. Best for the new year to you . . . and everyone.
