The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Denny Laine looks like he's wondering whether Jackie O can sing or play keyboards any better than Linda.

I hate to bring it up...but the Jackie O portion looks photoshopped.

No. The only work done on this photo (and it was done by me after it had been submitted) was balancing the contrast and some straightening/cropping of the edges: the kind of general clean-up stuff I do on much of what you see here. In the form I got it, it looked like something that had been scanned directly from a newspaper or a magazine. There's no way Steven would send some counterfeit entry. If Jackie O was added, she was added optically when the thing was originally published back in the 70s; and the chances of that are very very slim (she would have gone bananas, for one thing).

Sorry, I meant not disrespect to you or the blog. That was simply my initial reaction to the picture. I showed the picture to my roommate and he had a similar response.

It looks to me like what you see in a lot of older photos, where a naturally occurring light imbalance is magnified through old photo reproduction processes until it looks like they are lit from different light sources.

No, I understand you raised the issue in good faith (other words, you weren't just trying to needle us with some bogus matter, as some visitors have done here). When you posted the observation initially, I saw what you were referring to, but I felt the circumstantial evidence . . . the image, as I receved it, looking as though it had been scanned straight out of a publication of its time; my belief that Steven Thompson simply wouldn't do it, etc. . . . reduced the possibility of it almost to zero. Which is why I'm grateful to Joey for riding in here with an explanation for this that my less-than-elementary knowledge of photography's technical end would have made impossible.

Poor Linda! The Yoko Ono of her generation

Yoko was probably a better singer.
