The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

These are not two people that I have ever thought about at the same time before. Where the hell did you find this?

I take it this is the jaw-dropper, but to me this isn't as incongruous as the Kevin McCarthy/Edie Sedgwick picture. Thomas/Lollobrigida I see as a movie-star-meets-dignitary photo, a genre which though it breeds incongruities is fairly commonplace. I brought to the McCarthy/Sedgwick picture my image of McCarthy as a Hollywood B-movie and television actor who would not normally fall into avant garde circumstances, and whose fame was not the sort that opens all doors. Add to it the fact that (a) McCarthy is dressed like he could be going to a reception at the UN while Sedgwick is hardly dressed at all, and (b) this situation seems not to ruffle McCarthy's composure in the least and you get a disorienting image. Now, if you look deeper into McCarthy's career you see how he came out of early live TV drama, which puts him in more of a New York context, and with the additional information provided by the other comments you see the rational explanation, but when you come to it cold it just seems weird.
