Containing Multitudes Since 2004
I'm just hoping things don't get too crazy here. I guess for some celebrities, it means spending almost a week in Denver and then a short flight out to Telluride. I feel some civic pride about the having the convention in Denver, but a certain amount of apprehension.
"Looks like we have a few thugs out on the floor, Dan..."
It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times - a pity they didn't save all that energy for rioting at the Republican National Convention, their real nemesis. 'Course it really is only one party with two heads: Under a Republican administration, man exploits man; under a Democratic administration, it's the other way 'round.
Ah, the good old days...Senator Abraham Ribicoff at the podium, saying the Chicago police had used "Gestapo tactics" on the protestors, and being answered by a chorus of boos from the floor, led by a red-faced and furious Mayor Daley. The Democratic Party still hasn't really recovered. "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven!"
The thing is that the "Yippies" didn't see the Republicans as the "enemy." It was the Johnson Democrats (in their view) that caused The War, and here was the Democratic Party about to nominate Johnson's Vice President - who was obviously as bad as Johnson - as his replacement, after Bobby Kennedy had been martyred. A Republican president - Nixon or Rockefeller at least - couldn't possibly as bad as another Johnson Democrat. Subtlety and the "big picture" weren't exactly big on their list. The protests against Humphrey (who was as Liberal as they come) and Johnson (who had started peace talks) played right into the hands of the Republicans and Nixon who would promise a "secret" plan for peace with honor but would deliver an expansion of the war into Cambodia and Laos. Way to go guys.
I could've tried to explain that to them at Disneyland that day - wouldn't've helped.
Can I post in my flickr a picture of these?
