The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

They Were an, um, Item? #18

Cary Grant and Randolph Scott

As Tallulah Bankhead allegedly said when asked if a famous actor was gay, "I wouldn't know, dahling -- he never sucked my cock!"

Setting aside the fact that it was quite common for single men to share a residence, even in Hollywood (Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda lived together - were they "an item?"), I am reminded of the statement of Cary's third wife Betsy Drake: "I didn't have time to think about his homosexuality. We were too busy fucking."

You'll please note the question mark on the title of this entry; intended to signify that the pair's Item status is in some doubt.

We'll probably never know what actually went on with those two (and even though I don't question Betsy Drake's account, the two conditions aren't mutually exclusive). Some say they were; some say they weren't. Who knows? What is known is that there were rumors flying about Grant and Scott almost from the first . . . as there had not been with Fonda and Stewart (or David Niven and Errol Flynn for that matter) . . . and that said rumors persist. That alone renders them fit for at least a qualified entry in this series.

Maybe they were, and maybe they weren't. But no matter how you cut it, they were sure a lovely couple... of guys that is!
