The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

How timely! Eureka/Masters of Cinema's version of this just got released here yesterday. I ordered it as I was totally blown away by 'Army in the Shadows', easily one of the best films I saw last year. Last week Film Four here showed 3 or 4 J.P. Melville's, sadly nothing rare.

I will second that. I hope that this surge in interest in JPM means that we will see "Second Breath" and "Magnet of Doom" on new DVDs soon.

Agreed, Jeff.

I've been reading about this film for years, this is my first glimpse of it...it's only 12 pounds at amazon.co.uk...and they also have Leon Morin, Pretre and Le Doulos...is Enfant Terribles available in North america?
Completely unrelated...there's a Masters of Cinema edition of John Ford's Prisoner of Shark Island! Who knew?

Never mind, there's a Criterion edition of Enfants Terribles due out at the end of July...

Stephen, I paid a tenner from Amazon. The RRP is 20 quid.
These guys are putting out some really decent stuff.
