The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Oddly enough, this was the very film I wanted to post a seminal image from, however I only have an old VHS copy. Must get that Ford/Wayne DVD box one of these days...

(And I guess there are a pile of obscure Wayne titles like Reunion in France, Tycoon, Without Reservations and Trouble Along the Way coming from Warner Brothers. Geez guys, could we maybe get a copy of James Cagney's Taxi! one of these days?)

Just saw Taxi! on TV in Hilton Head on vacation, hadn't thought about in years. Wayne was in some seriously forgettable films, that all of a sudden are being remembered - helps when your centenary comes along. I like "Trouble Along the Way", but it had some excellent supporting roles to help - Charles Coburn, Marie Windsor, Donna Reed as a frigid psych job, and a very good Sherry Jackson, a seriously underrated child actress. Boy was she a knockout as she matured, possibly the most simply beautiful actress ever, tho she wasn't used well later on.

Lawd knows I'll want to see some of those Wayne DVDs (although I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy them) but there's just so much other stuff out there...
