The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

When Legends Gather #91

Buddy Rich and Jerry Lewis go (drum) head to head.

See for yourself.

GREAT!! thanks. A memory of when geniuses roamed the tv screen. Rich and Lewis, man, if you bottled the inchoate rage in those two you could have flattened Hiroshima twice. Imagine if it had been Buddy and Jerry coming together at the 500 Club instead of Dean and Jerry. The team would have lasted one night and there would have been six people dead.

Eek! Jerry looks as though he had more than a maintenance dosage of Percodan that day

I was pondering a series called The Many Faces of Joseph Levitch. The TV show alone is fodder for the thing.

Anytime I see a DVD of the Colgate Comedy Hour in a chain store bargain bin, I pounce. There's a pretty decent array of stuff out there (I have three two-disc sets that have unique stuff on them.)
