Seminal Image #170

Privilege
(Peter Watkins, 1967)

For some reason, I'm drawn to this image...for the life of me I can't explain why...
(thanks to Jay Ferguson for digging up this still)

You Onanist, you.

Damn, that's a great image, though.

Do you know that, as long as I've lived and as many movies as I've seen, I've yet to see a Peter Watkins film? Sure, I've read about 'em. But I ain't seen a-one.

Sad.

Well, Privilege may be the greatest film of the '60s that hardly anybody's seen (it's also Patti Smith's favourite movie, for what that's worth). But if you can't find this one (there are grey market copies out there), there's always The War Game or Culloden which show up on Bravo, I believe. I haven't seen any of his recent work, but his '60s stuff is groundbreaking.

Maybe about 15 years ago, but not now. Bravo these days is endless re-runs of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and the even more gay "Inside the Actor's Studio".

I should probably make a concerted effort to see some Peter Watkins. You'd think I might know this, but are his films at all present on the bootleg video circuit?

I'm sure some stuff is available through legit means, but my Privilege is definitely a boot (it's a so-so VHS dub). 5minutestolive.com has it...I might check it out the next time they have a sale.

But some stuff like Culloden has been released legitimately. Try Facets, that's where our local hip video store got their copy before they shut down. Or I could see if that copy has surfaced elsewhere.

Swac, honey...it's the girl running in that tight sweater...that's why you're drawn to the image. Just tell me when you need help clearing your head cuz I'm sure it looks something like your old desk. (which would make the grey matter...lavender).

Girl running in a tight sweater...you may have something there. Can't resist the combo of state repression and rampant hormones.

I always need help clearing my head. And if my grey matter is lavender, I could do it to the tune of Purple (b)Rain.
