The Explanation
(for those who require one)

And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Image hosted by
Brigitte Bardot, in a plain brown wrapper.

I cannot tell a lie. This isn't the first Bardot image to grace this series. She was, in fact, its inaugural subject. But this photo is too aggresively yummy to warrant exclusion; and anyway, something tells me guys who visit these shores won't complain too strenuously for my (deliberate) oversight.

By a weird coincidence, the arctic seal hunt started today.

No word if BB was out there on the ice floes clutching fuzzy white pups or not.

About the only good thing I can say about Brigitte Bardot is that she used to look good with her clothes off. As it stands she likes animals more than people and has views on race that I find repugnant.

Had lunch with photographer JMP yesterday. He basically apologized for the fact that when May '68 was taking place, he jumped intohis Ferrari and went jaunting off to Italy with BB.....underneath the paving stones, an entirely different form of beach.

(In fact, in France these days, BB is much-reviled for her support of ultra-rightist LePen, and for anti-immigrant remarks she made in one of her memoirs.)
